Mid-Atlantic Bight Shelf, Basin and Gulf Stream - HATTERAS 2003

This cruise aboard the R/V Cape Henlopen in August, 2003 departed from Cape Charles, VA just inside the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay and returned home to Lewes, DE. The purpose of this cruise was to explore the ecology of heterotrophic and photoheterotrophic bacteria in the Mid-Atlantic bight. Stations were sampled in the Gulf Stream, Atlantic Basin and at the Shelf Break. Water was collected from several depths in the euphotic zone and samples were taken for a number of analyses, including bacterial abundance, bacterial production, bacterial community structure (FISH), community activity (Micro-FISH), chlorophyll a, bacterial chlorophyll a, and the abundance of aerobic anoxigenic (AAP) bacteria.
